Como lector y espectador que soy, he aprendido a desconfiar del mientras. Aunque lea un libro en vilo o esté encantado durante la visión de una película, ya no juzgo hasta el día siguiente a haberlos terminado. Las más de las veces, lo confieso -es difícil sustraerse a la educación o a la programación de la sociedad en que uno vive-, al día siguiente no dedico ni una evocación ni un pensamiento a aquello que disfruté en el mientras, y descubro que se me ha disipado hasta su atmósfera. De tarde en tarde, en cambio, me doy cuenta de que la música, la pintura, la novela o la película me llaman aún y me rondan, que mi cabeza no es capaz de zafarse de ese mundo en el que estuve inmerso con la involuntaria previsión de salir de él al instante, en cuanto cerrase el volumen o abandonara el museo o el cine.
Javier MaríasNo sé yo ahora, hay esa tendencia a encerrar a los niños en una burbuja de felicidad entontencedora y sosiego falso, a no ponerlos en contacto ni siquiera con lo inquietante, y a evitar que conozcan el miedo y hasta que sepan de su existencia creo que circulan por ahí, que hay quienes les dan a leer versiones censuradas, amañadas o edulcoradas de los cuentos clásicos de Grimm y de Perrault y Andersen, desprovistas de lo tenebroso y cruel, de lo amenazador y siniestro , a lo mejor hasta de los disgustos y de los engaños. Una estupidez descomunal desde mi punto de vista. Padres ñoños. Educadores irresponsables. Yo eso lo consideraría un delito, por desamparo y por omisión de ayuda. Porque a los niños los protege mucho percibir el miedo ajeno, y así concebirlo con serenidad, desde su seguridad de fondo; experimentarlo vicariamente, a través de otros, sobre todo por personajes de ficción interpuestos, como un contagio de corta duración. Y además sólo de prestado, y no tanto como fingido. Imaginarse algo es empezar a resistirlo y eso es también aplicable a lo ya sucedido: uno resiste mejor las desgracias si después logra imaginarlas, después de haberlas sufrido. Y claro, el recurso más común de la genta es relatarlas.

It may be, rather, that nothing is ever unmixed and the thirst for totality is never quenched, perhaps because it is a false yearning. Nothing is whole or of a single piece, everything is fractured and evenomed, veins of peace run through the body of war and hatred insinuates itself into love and compassion, there is truce amid the quagmire of bullets and a bullet amid the revelries, nothing can bear to be unique or prevail or be dominant and everything needs fissures and cracks, needs it negation at the same time as its existence. And nothing is known with certainty and everything is told figuratively.
