It is fascinating that Baghdad had more than 100 public libraries in the year 891, Cordoba had 70 public libraries at the end of 10th century, while the royal library of Caliph al-‘Aziz, in the year 988, of the Fatimids in Cairo perhaps had more than 100,000 volumes collection arranged in classified order.
Balqis Suja'I ran across an excerpt today (in English translation) of some dialogue/narration from the modern popular writer, Paulo Coelho in his book: Aleph.(Note: bracketed text is mine.)... 'I spoke to three scholars,' [the character says 'at last.'] ...two of them said that, after death, the [sic (misprint, fault of the publisher)] just go to Paradise. The third one, though, told me to consult some verses from the Koran. [end quote]' ...I can see that he's excited. [narrator]' ...Now I have many positive things to say about Coelho: He is respectable, inspiring as a man, a truth-seeker, and an appealing writer; but one should hesitate to call him a 'literary' writer based on this quote. A 'literary' author knows that a character's excitement should be 'shown' in his or her dialogue and not in the narrator's commentary on it. Advice for Coelho: Remove the 'I can see that he's excited' sentence and show his excitement in the phrasing of his quote.(Now, in defense of Coelho, I am firmly of the opinion, having myself written plenty of prose that is flawed, that a novelist should be forgiven for slipping here and there.)Lastly, it appears that a belief in reincarnation is of great interest to Mr. Coelho ... Just think! He is a man who has achieved, (as Leonard Cohen would call it), 'a remote human possibility.' He has won lots of fame and tons of money. And yet, how his preoccupation with reincarnation—none other than an interest in being born again as somebody else—suggests that he is not happy!

والسؤال الذي يُثار عادة من جانب بعض المدافعين عن "سلطة النصوص" هو: أليس هناك من سبيل لإبقاء العقل إلا برفض النصوص؟ وهو سؤال ماكر خبيث. لأنه لا أحد يرفض النصوص، بل الرفض موجه إلى "سلطة النصوص" وهي السلطة المُضفاة على النصوص من جانب أتباع "النقل". والحقيقة أنه ليس هناك تصادم بين "العقل" و"النص" لسبب بديهي وبسيط، هو أن "العقل" هو الأداة الوحيدة الممكنة، والفعالية الإنسانية التي لا فعالية سواها، لفهم النص وشرحه وتفسيره. ولدينا هؤلاء المدافعون عن "النقل" بتشويه "العقل" والتقليل من شأنه.
إن السؤال لا يتعلق بقبول النص ولا برفضه، بل هو كيف يتلقى الإنسان النص ويتفاعل معه؟ لقد قام الإمام علي بن أبي طالب في رده المعروف جداً والمشهور على الخوارج حين قالوا: "لا حكم إلا لله" بتأسيس هذا الوعي الذي نحاول شرحه فقال: "القرآن بين دفتي المصحف لا ينطق وإنما يتكلم به الرجال". والدلالة الواضحة لهذا المبدأ المهم جداً والخطير، والمُغَّيب تماماً في الخطاب الديني المعاصر: إن عقل الرجال ومستوى معرفتهم وفهمهم هو الذي يحدد الدلالة ويصوغ المعنى.
وهذا كله ينفي وجود "تصادم" بين العقل والنص، وإنما بين العقل وسلطة النصوص؛ وذلك أنه حين تتحول النصوص إلى سلطة مطلقة ومرجعية شاملة بفعل الفكر الديني الذي حللناه في كثير من دراساتنا وأبحاثنا، تتضاءل سلطة العقل. وفي تضاؤل سلطة العقل يكمن التخلف الذي نعانيه على جميع المستويات والصعد. فإذا أضفنا إلى ذلك ما سبق قوله في الفقرة السابقة من أن سلطة العقل هي السلطة الوحيدة التي تُفهَم على أساسها النصوص الدينية، يصبح التقليل من شأن العقل مؤدياً مباشرة إلى إلغاء النصوص.
والنصوص في هذه الحالة تصبح مملوكة ملكية استئثار لبعض العقول التي تمارس هيمنتها باسم النصوص. والحقيقة أن سعي الخطاب الديني لتكريس سلطة النصوص ولتكريس شموليتها هو في الواقع تكريس لسلطة عقول أصحابه وممثليه على باقي العقول. وهكذا تتكرس شمولية تأويلاتهم واجتهاداتهم، فيصبح الخلاف معها كفراً وإلحاداً وهرطقةً وهي الصفات التي أُلصِقَت بكل اجتهادات الباحث.
