You're crazy. You're impossible."
"I'm crazy?"
He tipped my chin up and planted a quick, rough kiss on my mouth. "And I must be crazy for putting up with it.
How did you get in?"
"I move in mysterious ways."
"God moves in mysterious ways. You move like lightning-here one moment, gone the next.

Or, if you decide you want to sleep at my place, on opposite sides of my bedroom with a Do Not Cross line drawn down the middle, I'll do it. I won't like it, but I'll do it.

He grinned, hopping off the bike. "Now that is an invitation.

One last thing," he said. "Stop looking for me."
"I'm not looking for you." I scoffed.
He touched his index finger to my forehead, my skin absurdly warming under his touch. It didn't escape me that he couldn't seem to stop finding reasons to touch me. Nor did I miss that I didn't want him to stop. "Under all the layers, a part of you remembers. It's the part that came looking for me tonight. It's that part that's going to get you killed, if you're not careful."
We stood face-to-face, both of us breathing hard. The sirens were so close now.
"What am I supposed to tell the police?" I said.
"You're not going to talk to the police."
"Oh, really? Funny, because I plan on telling them exactly how you rammed that tire iron into Gabe's back. Unless you answer my questions."
He gave an ironic snort. "Blackmail? You've changed, Angel.
Vee never needed a reason to do something stupid. Sad thing was, most of the time I didn't either.

Quit calling me Grey. It makes me sound like I’m a boy. Like Dorian Gray.”
“Dorian who?”
I sighed. “Just think up something else. Plain old Nora works too, you know.”
“Sure thing, Gumdrop.”
I grimaced. “I take that back. Let’s stick with Grey.

There’s an organic grocery store just off the highway exit. I can’t remember the last time I went shopping for food.” A smile glittered in his eyes. “I might have gone overboard.”
I walked into the kitchen, with gleaming stainless-steel appliances, black granite countertops, and walnut cabinetry. Very masculine, very sleek. I went for the fridge first. Water bottles, spinach and arugula, mushrooms, gingerroot, Gorgonzola and feta cheeses, natural peanut butter, and milk on one side. Hot dogs, cold cuts, Coke, chocolate pudding cups, and canned whipped cream on the other. I tried to picture Patch pushing a shopping cart down the aisle, tossing in food as it pleased him. It was all I could do to keep a straight face.

He grinned. “Busted. I’m a monster. Jev is my deceptively harmless — and shockingly handsome — alter ego.”
“And I’m on top of it,” she announced with witty triumph.
“Is that a Freudian slip?”
His bluntness caught her off guard. A self-conscious blush rose in her face.
I could get you to smile like that, and without sales tax."
I whirled around to find the real Patch standing in the fitting room behind me. He was wearing jeans and a snug white tee. His arms were folded loosely over his chest, and his black eyes smiled down at me.
Heat that wasn't entirely uncomfortable flushed through my body.
"I could make all kinds of pervert jokes right now," I quipped.
