Doamne! Ce vom fi făcut o mie de ani?! Toată viaţa noastră de un secol încoace nu este decît procesul prin care am ajuns să ne dăm seama că n-am făcut nimic… Trecutul României nu mă flatează deloc şi nici nu sînt prea mîndru de strămoşii mei lipsiţi de orgoliu că au putut dormi atîta timp, în aşteptarea libertăţii. România are un sens întrucît o începem. Trebuie s-o creăm lăuntric, pentru a putea renaşte în ea. Plăsmuirea acestei ţări să ne fie singura obsesie. Orice om care vrea sau este chemat să joace un rol profetic în viaţa României trebuie să se convingă că în ţara aceasta orice gest, orice acţiune, orice atitudine este un început absolut, că nu există continuări, reluări, linii şi directive. Pentru ceea ce trebuie făcut nimeni nu ne precede, nimeni nu ne îndeamnă, nimeni nu ne ajută. Alte popoare şi-au trăit începuturile naiv, inconştient, nereflectat, trezindu-se din somnul materiei la viaţa istorică printr-un insensibil proces, cu o evoluţie naturală, cu o lunecare insesizabilă. Noi, dimpotrivă, ştim şi trebuie să ştim că începem, sîntem obligaţi a avea luciditatea începuturilor de viaţă, conştiinţa vie şi reflectată a aurorei. Trezirea noastră la viaţă coincide cu o dilatare de perspectivă, pe care celelalte popoare o cunosc în amurgurile lor. De nu vom avea atîta tărie în conştiinţă pentru a da directive vieţii noastre fragile, nu vom face niciodată istorie. De nu vom exploata paradoxul ciudat al „istoriei“ noastre, pierduţi sîntem. Fiecare din noi este în situaţia lui Adam. Sau poate condiţia noastră este şi mai nenorocită, fiindcă n-avem nimic înapoi, pentru a avea regrete. Totul trebuie început, absolut totul. Noi n-avem de lucrat decît cu viitorul. Adamismul în cultură nu înseamnă altceva decît că fiecare problemă de viaţă spirituală, istorică şi politică se pune pentru întîia oară, că tot ceea ce trăim se determină într-o lume de valori nouă, într-o ordine şi un stil incomparabil. Cultura românească este o cultură adamitică, fiindcă tot ce se naşte în ea n-are precedent. (Şi în sens peiorativ.) Fiecare reedităm destinul lui Adam; decît, acesta a fost scos din paradis, iar noi dintr-un mare somn istoric.

CioranThere are people who are destined to taste only the poison in things, for whom any surprise is a painful surprise and any experience a new occasion for torture. if someone were to say to me that such suffering has subjective reasons, related to the individual's particular makeup, i would then ask; is there an objective criterion for evaluating suffering? who can say with precision that my neighbor suffers more than i do or that jesus suffered more than all of us? there is no objective standard because suffering cannot be measured according to the external stimulation or local irritation of the organism, but only as it is felt and reflected in consciousness. alas, from this point of view, any hierarchy is out of the question. each person remains with his own suffering, which he believes absolute and unlimited. how much would we diminish our own personal suffering if we were to compare it to all the world's sufferings until now, to the most horrifying agonies and the most complicated tortures, the mostcruel deaths and the most painful betrayals, all the lepers, all those burned alive or starved to death? nobody is comforted in his sufferings by the thought that we are all mortals, nor does anybody who suffers really find comfort in the past or present suffering of others. because in this organically insufficient and fragmentary world, the individual is set to live fully, wishing to make of his own existence an absolute.
