سال ها پیش در یک کتاب وحشتناک خوانده بود فاجعه نه ساده است و نه ناگهانی . یعنی هم ترکیب چند چیز است هم ذره ذره اتفاق می افتد . در کتاب نوشته شده بود معمولا چند چیز باید به هم بچسبند تا فاجعه ای رخ دهد . نوشته شده بود از ایننظر فاجعه مثل خوشبختی است . در خوشبختی نیز چند چیز بایدهمزمان اتفاق بیفتد تا کسی خوشبخت شود . پول تنها کافی نیست . عشق تنها کافی نیست . شهرت تنها کافی نیست . اما اگر همه این ها با هم باشند شاید بشود گفت کسی خوشبخت شده است . از نظر نویسنده ، تنها تفاوت آن ها شاید این باشد که در خوشبختی انگار چیزها خیلی ضعیفبه هم چسبیده اند . دیگر هیچ وقت از هم جدانمیشئند . چون وقتی اتفاق افتاد دیگر نمیتوان آن ها را به حالت اول برگرداند. نویسنده نوشته بود وقتی لیوانی شکست دیگر شکسته است . وقتی چیزی سوخت دیگر سوخته است . وقتی کسی روی سرسره رفت دیگر باید تا آخر شیب پایین برود . برگشتی در کار نیست . برای همین است که از نظر نویسنده کتاب ، هر خوشبختی همیشه در معرض فرو ریختن و تبدیل شدن به فاجعه است اما فاجعه ها هرگز تبدیل به خوشبختی نمی شوند ؛ حتی شاید شدتشان بیشتر هم بشود یا همان طور ثابت بمانند اما به هر حال از بین نمی روند . به همین دلیل روز به روز به فاجعه ها اضافه می شود و از خوشبختی ها کم می شود . بعد نویسنده به عنوان نمونه ای شایع از تبدیل یک خوشبختیبه فاجعه ، با دقت شرح داده بود که چه طور عشق ها اول تبدیل می شوند به دوست داشتن های ساده ، بعد به بی تفاوتی و گاه به نفرت و در نتیجه خوشبختی موقتی مثل عشق تجزیه می شود به یک فاجعه ماندگار. توی کتاب نوشته شده بود فاجعه مثل این است که به کسی چند گلوله شلیک کنیم ؛ به طوری که گلوله آخر ، به عنوان تیر خلاص ،توی شقیقه اش شلیک شود .
