War, for all its evil, is at any rate an unanswerable test of strength, like a try-your-grip machine. Great strength returns the penny, and there is no way of faking the result.
George OrwellPacifism is a psychological curiosity rather than a political movement. Some of the extremer pacifists, starting out with a complete renunciation of violence, have ended by warmly championing Hitler and even toying with antisemitism. This is interesting, but it is not important. ‘Pure’ pacifism, which is a by-product of naval power, can only appeal to people in very sheltered positions. Moreover, being negative and irresponsible, it does not inspire much devotion.

Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him.
The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At one end of it a coloured poster, too large for indoor display, had been tacked to the wall. It depicted simply an enormous face, more than a metre wide: the face of a man of about forty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features. Winston made for the stairs. It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working, and at present the electric current was cut off during daylight hours. It was part of the economy drive in preparation for Hate Week. The flat was seven flights up, and Winston, who was thirty-nine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way. On each landing, opposite the lift-shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran.
كان الحزب يزعم، بالطبع، أنه حرر العامة من أغلال العبودية، فقبل الثورة كانوا يلاقون أبشع أنواع الاضطهاد على أيدي الرأسماليين، كما يُضربون بالسياط ويتضورون جوعا، ومانت النساء يُكرهن على العمل في مناجم الفحم (والحقيقة أن النساء ما زلن يعملن في مناجم الفحم) ، وكان الأطفال يُباعون إلى المصانع في سن السادسة.
ولكن في الوقت نفسه ومما يتوافق مع ازدواجية التفكير، كان الحزب في أدبياته يؤكد على أن عامة الشعب طبقة وضيعة بالفطرة وأنه يجب إبقاؤهم مذعنين كالحيوانات.
في الحقيقة كان ما يعرف عن العامة قليل، ولم يكن ثمة ما يدعو لمعرفة المزيد عنهم.
فما داموا يعملون ويتكاثرون فتصرفاتهم الأخرى غير ذات أهمية، ولذلك فقد ترك لهم الحبل على الغارب كقطيع من الأبقار تُرك طليقاً على مراعي الأرجنتين، يعيشون نمطاً من الحياة يتناسب مع طبائعهم.
كانوا يولدون ويكبرون في الأزقة الفقيرة ثم يذهبون إلى العمل في سن الثانية عشرة ويمروا مروراً عابراً في مرحلة تمثل ذروة الجمال والرغبة الجنسية، وبعدئذ يتزوجون في العشرين ويبلغون أواسط العمر في الثلاثين، ويموت معظمهم في الستين.
كل ما يشغل بالهم العمل الجسدي الشاق ورعاية الأطفال والعناية بالمنزل والمشاجرات التافهة مع الجيران ، ومشاهدة الأفلام ولعب الكرة واحتساء الجعة، وفوق كل ذلك كانت المقامرة تملأ أفق عقولهم.
ومن ثم لم تكن السيطرة عليهم أمراً عسيراً؛ إذ يكفي أن تندس ثلة قليلة من عملاء شرطة الفكر بينهم، ينشرون الإشاعات المغرضة، حتى يتعرفوا على القلة منهم التي يُعتقد أنها مكمن الخطر فيستأصلون شأفتهم.
ولم تُسجل أية محاولة لغرس أيديولوجية الحزب فيهم؛ إذ لم يكن من المرغوب فيه أن يكون لدى عامة الشعب وعي سياسي قوي؛ فكل ما هو مطلوب منهم وطنية بدائية يمكن اللجوء إليها حينما يستلزم الأمر إقناعهم بقبول ساعات عمل أطول أو حصص أقل من السلع التموينية.
بل وحتى عندما كان ينتابهم شعور بالسخط، كما يحدث أحياناً، فإن سخطهم لم يكن ليفضي إلى شيء كونهم يعيشون بلا مبادئ عامة، ولذلك كانوا يركزون غضبهم على تظلمات خاصة وقليلة الأهمية.
فالأخطار الكبرى لا تسترعي انتباههم.
إذ لم يكن من المرغوب فيه أن يكون لدى عامة الشعب وعي سياسي قوي، فكل المطلوب منهم وطنية بدائية يمكن اللجوء إليها عند اللزوم.
