Only through suffering do we learn
AeschylusNothing forces us to know
What we do not want to know
Except pain
I know how men in exile feed on dreams of hope.
AeschylusBastions of wealth
are no deference for the man
who treads the grand altar of Justice
down and out of sight.
To learn is to be young, however old.
AeschylusIt is always in season for old men to learn.
AeschylusMy will is mine...I shall not make it soft for you.
AeschylusATHENA: You wish to be called righteous rather than act right. [...] I say, wrong must not win by technicalities.
AeschylusFURIES:
Over the beast doomed to the fire
this is the chant, scatter of wits,
frenzy and fear, hurting the heart,
song of the Furies
binding brain and blighting blood
in its stringless melody.
Your speech is pompous sounding, full of pride, as fits the lackey of the Gods. You are young and young your rule and you think the tower in which you live is free from sorrow: from it have I not seen two tyrants thrown? The third, who now is king, I shall yet live to see him fall, of all three most suddenly, most dishonored. Do you think I will crouch before your Gods, -so new-and tremble? I am far from that.
