He is free from self- display, and therefore he shines;
Lao Tzufrom self-assertion, and therefore he is distinguished;
Lao Tzufrom self-boasting, and therefore his merit is acknowledged;
Lao Tzufrom self-complacency, and therefore he acquires superiority.
Lao TzuIt is because he is thus free from striving that therefore no one in the world is able to strive with him.

True fullness seems empty,
yet it is fully present.
True straightness seems crooked.
True wisdom seems foolish.
True art seems artless.
The best rulers are scarcely known by their subjects;
The next best are loved and praised;
The next are feared;
The next despised:
They have no faith in their people,
And their people become unfaithful to them.
When the best rulers achieve their purpose
Their subjects claim the achievement as their own.

doesn't stand firm.
He who rushes ahead
doesn't go far.
He who tries to shine
dims his own light.
He who defines himself
can't know who he really is.
He who has power over others
can't empower himself.
He who clings to his work
will create nothing that endures.

Desires wither the heart.
