Ah, how good it is to be among people who are reading.
Rainer Maria RilkeYou must give birth to your images. They are the future waiting to be born. Fear not the strangeness you feel. The future must enter you long before it happens. Just wait for the birth, for the the hour of the new clarity.
Rainer Maria RilkeYou who never arrived
in my arms, Beloved, who were lost
from the start,
I don't even know what songs
would please you. I have given up trying
to recognize you in the surging wave of
the next moment. All the immense
images in me -- the far-off, deeply-felt landscape,
cities, towers, and bridges, and un-
suspected turns in the path,
and those powerful lands that were once
pulsing with the life of the gods--
all rise within me to mean
you, who forever elude me.
You, Beloved, who are all
the gardens I have ever gazed at,
longing. An open window
in a country house-- , and you almost
stepped out, pensive, to meet me. Streets that I chanced
upon,--
you had just walked down them and vanished.
And sometimes, in a shop, the mirrors
were still dizzy with your presence and, startled, gave back
my too-sudden image. Who knows? Perhaps the same
bird echoed through both of us
yesterday, separate, in the evening...

You are nearing the land that is life; you will recognize it by its seriousness.
Rainer Maria RilkeBut there is much beauty here, because there is much beauty everywhere.
Rainer Maria RilkeThis is the miracle that happens every time to those who really love: the more they give, the more they possess.
Rainer Maria RilkePerhaps the same bird echoed through both of us yesterday, seperate, in the evening.
Rainer Maria RilkeIf there were a place that we didn't know of, and there,
on some unsayable carpet, lovers displayed
what they never could bring to mastery here – the bold
exploits of their high-flying hearts,
their towers of pleasure, their ladders
that have long since been standing where there was no ground, leaning
just on each other, trembling, - and could master all this,
before the surrounding spectators, the innumerable soundless dead:
Would these, then, throw down their final, forever saved-up,
forever hidden, unknown to us, eternally valid
coins of happiness before the at last
genuinely smiling pair on the gratified carpet?

There are no classes in life for beginners: right away you are always asked to deal with what is most difficult.

I live not in dreams but in contemplation of a reality that is perhaps the future.
