Thomas BernhardOnu ertesi gün yine bir gezintiye davet etmenin doğru olup olmayacağı konusunda emin değildim. Bütün gün evdeydim, daha doğrusu alt kattaki odalarda kaldım, beni bütün öğleden önce ve öğleden sonranın büyük bölümünde meşgul eden İranlı kadını düşünmekten birden bir kitabın yardımıyla kurtulma gereğini duydum ve uzun zaman sonra, kesinlikle haftalar sonra bir şey okumayı beceremedikten sonra, şimdi yine yukarıdaki kitap odasına çıkabildim. Yukarıdaki odaların en küçüğünü kendime kitap odası diye adlandırılan bir oda olarak düzenlemiştim ve içinde okuma dışında hiçbir şeyin yapılamayacağı biçimde tasarlamıştım, kitap ve yazılarla uğraşılır biçimde, bu amaçla bu odaya tek bir sandalye koymuştum, o da tek pencerenin önünde duruyordu, sert, her açıdan rahat olmayan ve tamamen basit bir sandalyeydi, okuma amaçlı olanlar içinde insanın düşünebileceği en uç örnekti ve böylece pencerenin önündeki ahşap sandalyede oturarak, eğer karar vermişsem hiç rahatsız edilmeden hangisi olursa olsun istediğim kitaba dalabiliyordum, o öğleden sonra, çok iyi anımsadığım üzere, anne tarafımdan büyükbabamdan kalan mirasla elime geçen Schopenhauer’in İstem ve Tasarım Olarak Dünya’sını okudum, okumaktan, beni her açıdan aklayacak bir zevkten başka bir şey beklemediğim zamanlarda hep bu kitabı okurdum. İstem ve Tasarım Olarak Dünya daha gençlik yıllarımdan bu yana benim için felsefe kitaplarının en önemlisi olmuştu ve kendimi onun etkisine bırakmış, yani kafamın bütünüyle tazelenmesine hep güvenmiştim. Başka hiçbir kitapta hiçbir zaman daha duru bir dil ve aynı biçimde duru bir akıl bulamadım, hiçbir edebiyat yapıtı bende daha derin bir etki yaratmadı. Bu kitapla birarada olduğum zaman hep mutluydum. Ama çok ender bu kitap için mutlaka gereken doğal ve zihinsel hazırlığa sahiptim ve bu yüzden çok ender olarak bu olağanüstü ve doğrusu dünya hakkında karar veren kitapla birarada olmaya olanağım vardı, çünkü İstem ve Tasarım Olarak Dünya tpkı az sayıdaki diğer en yüce kitaplar gibi, yalnız en uç yetenekte ve bu yüzden algılama yeteneğinde ve algılama onurunda insana açılır ve deşifre olurlar. Bu olanağa o günden sonra en büyük ölçüde sahiptim. Beni yalnız uzun olmakla kalmayıp mutlaka son yılların en uzun süren yalıtılmışlığından ve düş kırıklığından da çekip çıkaran İranlı kadınla karşılaşma, kelimenin tam anlamıyla, onunla karaçam ormanına yaptığım gezintinin, ki sadece yüzeysel bakıldığında başarısız olmuş, gerçekte ise tam tersi bir etki yapmış olmasının, benim bu kadar uzun süre sonra yine kitap odamda ve üstelik de hemen İstem ve Tasarım Olarak Dünya ile sakinleşmemin ve beni hoş bir ruh durumuna sokmasının en son nedeni değildi. Hele bir saat ya da uzun bir süreyi İstem ve Tasarım Olarak Dünya ile geçirdikten sonra birdenbire doğabilimsel çalışmalarıma istek duyacağım aklıma gelmezdi ve ben kalkıp kitap odasından dışarı çıkıp, içine doğabilimsel çalışmalarımı, yani bütün doğabilimsel yazılarımı ve bu doğabilimle ilgili diğer yazı ve kitapları kilitlediğim odaya gittim. Aylardır bu yazıları ve yazıların yazılarını ve kitapları ve kitapların kitaplarını görememiştim, çünkü en derin düş kırıklığı içindeydim. Bu durum artık son bulmuştu.

Her mother, an unshapely, chubby-cheeked creature from the rural gentry of Styria, permanently lost her hair at the age of forty after being treated for influenza by her husband, and prematurely withdrew from society. She and her husband were able to live in the Gentzgasse thanks to her mother's fortune, which derived from the family estates in Styria and then devolved upon her. She provided for everything, since her husband earned nothing as a doctor. He was a socialite, what is known as a beau, who went to all the big Viennese balls during the carnival season and throughout his life was able to conceal his stupidity behind a pleasingly slim exterior. Throughout her life Auersberger's mother-in-law had a raw deal from her husband, but was content to accept her modest social station, not that of a member of the nobility, but one that was thoroughly petit bourgeois. Her son-in-law, as I suddenly recalled, sitting in the wing chair, made a point of hiding her wig from time to time--whenever the mood took him--both in the Gentzgasse and at the Maria Zaal in Styria, so that the poor woman was unable to leave the house. It used to amuse him, after he had hidden her wig, to drive his mother-in-law up the wall, as they say. Even when he was going on forty he used to hide her wigs--by that time she has provided herself with several--which was a symptom of his sickness and infantility. I often witnessed this game of hide-and-seek at Maria Zaal and in the Gentzgasse, and I honestly have to say that I was amused by it and did not feel in the least bit ashamed of myself. His mother-in-law would be forced to stay at home because her son-in-law had hidden her wigs, and this was especially likely to happen on public holidays. In the end he would throw the wig in her face. He needed his mother-in-law's humiliation, I reflected, sitting in the wing chair and observing him in the background of the music room, just as he needed the triumph that this diabolical behavior brought him.

I really only write about inner landscapes and most people don’t see them, because they see practically nothing within, because they think that because it’s inside, it’s dark, and so they don’t see anything. I don’t think I’ve ever yet, in any of my books, described a landscape. There's really nothing of the kind in any of them. I only ever write concepts. And so I’m always referring to "mountains" or "a city" or "streets." But as to how they look: I've never produced a description of a landscape. That's never even interested me.
Thomas BernhardIn theory we understand people, but in practice we can't put up with them, I thought, deal with them for the most part reluctantly and always treat them from our point of view. We should observe and treat people not from our point of view but from all angles, I thought, associate with them in such a way that we can say we associate with them so to speak in a completely unbiased way, which however isn't possible, since we actually are always biased against everybody.
Thomas BernhardFLEISCHMANN: How are you feeling at the moment?
BERNHARD: Extremely content, I have to say. The water's splashing, the sun is shining; simple Spaniards and Englishmen who can't be understood [are talking]—an ideal constellation. But it won't last long. All of a sudden the whole thing is struck by a bolt of lightning that destroys it completely. But perhaps today it’ll last all the way through till night; anything’s possible. Occasionally everything’s nice for a couple of days at a stretch.
