иногда могу нанимать инвалидов, если те еще на что-то способны, то есть могу
делать кое-что из того, что противоречит негласному кодексу. Я был в таком
бешенстве, что принимал абы кого; принял бы мустангов и горилл, если бы
сумел вдохнуть в них хоть чуточку смекалки, совершенно необходимой для
доставки телеграмм. Еще несколько дней назад к закрытию оставалось не больше
пяти-шести вакансий. Теперь -- три, четыре, пять сотен, они убегали, как
песок между пальцев. Просто удивительно. Я сидел и без лишних вопросов брал
всех подчистую: ниггеров, евреев, паралитиков, инвалидов, судимых,
проституток, маньяков, извращенцев, идиотов, всех сучьих ублюдков, способных
держаться на двух ногах и удержать в руке телеграмму. Управляющие в сто
одном нашем филиале были при смерти. Я смеялся. Я смеялся все дни напролет
при мысли о том, какое вонючее варево из всего этого приготовил. Жалобы
лились рекой из всех частей города. Сервис был искалечен, приперт, задушен.
Мул управился бы проворней некоторых наших идиотов, поставленных мною в
упряжку.
