لا بد أننا جميعا عشنا في أوقات اكتشفنا فيها أنه من الممتع، بل من المريح أن نحط من أنفسنا. حتى ونحن نقول لأنفسنا إننا لا قيمة لنا مرات ومرات، وكأن التكرار سوف يجعل ذلك حقيقة. فجأة نجد أننا تحررنا من كل تلك القيود الأخلاقية التي تدعونا للاذعان، ومن القلق الخانق لضرورة أن نطيع القواعد والقوانين، ومن الاضطرار إلى أن نكز على أسناننا ونحن نتشوف لأن نكون مثل الآخرين. وعندما يحط الآخرون من شأننا، نصل إلى نفس النتيجة التي نصل إليها عندما نبادر نحن إلى إذلال أنفسنا. ثم نجد أنفسنا في مكان حيث يمكن أن ننغمس بمنتهى الأريحية في وجودنا ورائحتنا وقذارتنا وعاداتنا، المكان الذي يمكن أن نتخلى فيه عن كل أمل في تحسين الذات والتوقف عن محاولة تغذية الأفكار المتفائلة حول البشر الآخرين. هذا المكان شديد الراحة لدرجة أننا لا نستطيع إلا أن نشعر بالامتنان للغضب والأنانية التي أوصلتنا إلى تلك اللحظة من الحرية والعزلة.
